Scalloped Bracing? Martin scalloped bracing is used in a number of their guitars, the HD28 is an example. The X bracing was developed by C. F. Martin but has been used by other makers. The scalloped bracing allows the top more freedom to move. In the HD28 a 5/16-inch bracing set is used. The scalloped bracing looks similar to a suspension bridge. The X bracing is supported by a popsicle brace, truss brace, and six tone bars: two long ones behind the bridge plate and two pairs along the outer side off the main X braces. How these are shaped will influence tone and sound quality. Most of the bracing is of Sitka spruce that is quarter sawn. The bridge plate is currently maple, while in the past other woods, including rosewood, were used.

The Non scalloped is similar . It also comes in 1/4-inch and 5/16-inch sizes. The D28 is a non scalloped 5/16-inch size. As for bracing style, it is almost the same as the HD28. The difference is that the bracing is not shaped. This allows for more stressing of the top. It has the same bracing layout.
